Christina Sutcliffe enters her second season on the coaching staff at Miami after a three-year stint as the head softball coach at the University of Rhode Island.
In her first season as an assistant (2005), Sutcliffe handled the pitching staff and mentored Kelly Cabana, who finished the season ranked among the top ten in the Mid-American Conference in numerous pitching categories. For the season, Cabana tied for second in appearances (40), tied for fifth in games started (25), tied for sixth in saves (2) and tied for eighth in complete games (15). In MAC-only games, Cabana finished the season ranked second in appearances (19) and in complete games (12).
Prior to joining the Miami staff, Sutcliffe compiled a 42-82 overall record while at Rhode Island, including a 12-25 mark in the Atlantic 10. Her best season was 2003 when she guided the Rams to a 20-22 record and a 7-8 mark in conference as Rhode Island narrowly missed qualifying for the A-10 Tournament. During her tenure, she helped oversee a $68,000 renovation of the Rams' softball field in 2004 that included an overhaul of the playing surface, drainage, and irrigation systems.
Sutcliffe previously served as an assistant at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga during the 2002 season where she worked primarily with the pitching staff. Her staff compiled a 1.50 earned run average in her lone season at Chattanooga, and she helped direct the Lady Mocs to a 44-15 record and the Southern Conference Tournament title. She also coached Beth Alexander who was named all-conference and SoCon Tournament Most Valuable Player after finishing 25-7 with a 1.05 ERA, 22 complete games and 197 strikeouts.
In addition to her collegiate softball experience, Sutcliffe also served as head softball coach at Boynton Beach High School in 2001.
Sutcliffe played collegiately at Florida Atlantic University where she was a highly decorated pitcher. During her four seasons, she logged over 600 innings in the circle and compiled a 67-20 career record with 71 complete games, 25 shutouts and two no-hitters. Sutcliffe was named to the Trans America Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team four times and selected TAAC Tournament MVP in 1997.
Sutcliffe, a native of Crowne Point, Ind., earned both her bachelor's degree in mathematics and master's degree in education from Florida Atlantic.
